Chapter 14

After making a call to Olympus to tell him we’d discovered Zohar’s missing pendant, we opened the bags in the wagon and took out the items. Most of it was clothing, but there was also a big bundle of money, along with travel documents.

“I’ve never heard of Paulo Mitherino,” Storm said. “He can’t be from here. He could be passing through and stashed his wagon here thinking it wouldn’t be noticed.”

I looked over the documents. There were travel details for an around-the-world trip with an open-ended ticket. “I don’t know him either. But he must have money if he’s going to all these places.”

“I wonder if he wants someone to carry his bags,” Storm said.

“You should hang around and ask. Although...” I pointed at the pendant. “Since this is here, it could mean Paulo is connected to what happened to Zohar.”

“Hmmm, I may overlook that if I get to hang out on all these beaches. This guy must be a sun worshipper.”

I chuckled. “I never figured you for a beach bunny.”

“You should see me in a pair of rabbit ears.”

“Is there anything else useful in the bags?” I peered at the contents of the open bags.

“Nothing I can see. The clothing is all designer, though. Whoever this guy is, he blows more on a single shirt than I spend on a month of groceries.”

I checked the side pockets of the bag and discovered a passport. I flipped to the picture, and my eyes widened. “This is a photograph of Zohar! But the name doesn’t match. This passport is for Paulo Mitherino.”

Storm studied the passport for several minutes, using a small light ball to see it clearly. “This is a fake. A great fake. You have to look closely to see it isn’t legit.”

“Why would Zohar have a passport made out in another name?”

“You’ll have to ask your ghost friend that question. But most people get fake passports because they’re escaping from something.”

“I need to get Zohar here.” I closed my eyes and focused on summoning him. He didn’t appear. I tried again, but he was either ignoring me or occupied with Brodie, because he didn’t show up.

“These clothes and money must belong to him,” Storm said. “Zohar was making plans to travel.”

“Without Elsbeth? I know things were bad between them, but was he considering doing a moonlit flit? And did Elsbeth know about it?”

“Has she mentioned he was going away?”

“No, but then Elsbeth is good at not telling the whole truth.”

A fierce warning growl rumbled outside.

“Storm, call off Fire Fang!” Olympus yelled.

Storm grinned. “He’ll only give you a friendly nip if you make any sudden movements.”

“Nothing feels friendly about this. He has my arm in his mouth.”

Storm whistled. “Fire Fang, drop your new toy.”

There was more growling, but then the door creaked open and Olympus appeared, wiping down his arm with a hankie. He looked at the bags we’d rifled through and frowned. “You didn’t tell me you were tampering with evidence.”

“We’re only very carefully tampering. But you need to look at this.
